This project has received funding from the Operational Programme Research, Development and Education, Call: Long-term Intersectoral Cooperation and Long term Intersectoral Cooperation for ITI.

Project title: „Research on the management of waste, materials and other products from metallurgical and related sectors “

Registration number: CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/17_049/0008426

Coordinator: VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava, Faculty of Materials Science and Technology

Project duration: 01/2019 – 10/2022

Budget:

  • Total budget of the project: 78 023 647,- CZK
  • Subsides part: 69 070 743,- CZK

The main idea of the project is smart management of the waste and by-product materials originating during pig iron and steel manufacturing. Two research organizations and five industrial partners are involved in a project team. The research activities are divided into two work packages.

WP1 – Research of material recovery of slags

In the Czech Republic, iron and steel metallurgy produces more than two million tons of slag per year. The project focuses on the parts of slags that do not find use or their use brings only a small economic and social benefit. Reducing the amount of landfilled slag can contribute to improving the economic balance of slag management at the production companies involved in the project. The aim of WP 1 is to increase the material use of slags in the metallurgical industry - their recycling, the use of slag to produce conventional binders, in the preparation of alternative binders, and in the use of slag as a base material for construction purposes.

WP2 - Research of other solid wastes, materials and by-products from metallurgical and related operations and their further utilization

Next to the slags, the metallurgy sector generates the wide range of other by-products, wastes or in general the materials, which do not represent the main objective of given metallurgical production. These are for example dusts, which originates during the cleaning of the gases used during the metallurgical processes or different kinds of the sludge and exposed forming mixtures with furan based binders used during the foundry processes and mixtures of the refractories. Research of the possible treatment of these kinds of materials aimed at the preparation of new products with the additional value is the main goal of WP2.

The main idea of the project is a SMART solution for the management of metallurgical wastes and by-products.
